The term "invitation" specifically refers to a written or verbal request that asks someone to join an event or participate in an activity. This definition encompasses various contexts, such as inviting someone to a party, a meeting, or any social gathering. The essence of an invitation is the act of reaching out to another person to include them in an experience, making it a key component of social interactions.

While the other options present possibilities related to gatherings or events, they are not accurate definitions of what an invitation specifically represents. A request for a financial donation pertains to fundraising, a formal document refers to certificates or official notices, and a visual representation does not capture the communicative aspect of inviting someone to attend or participate. Therefore, the correct understanding of "invitation" lies in its role as a request to engage in a specific activity or occasion.
